Daily Reflections on Life in Japan June 18 2026

Today was surprisingly cool—chilly, even! I was still catching up on sleep around noon after the night-shift marketing grind for clients back in America, and we had to turn off the air conditioning. It's almost summer, but it felt more like early spring. This is the first time in over four years here that June has been this cold. Global cooling, anyone?

My wife really surprised me with a homemade ginger cake and chocolate pudding (made with boiled eggs!). I wasn't expecting anything special, so that was a lovely treat. Becoming a dad has been one of the best things in my life, and watching our daughter grow up in the mountains of Japan makes it even better.

She’s already mixing languages in the cutest ways! This morning, she said "Konbanwa" when it was still morning. My wife and I just exchanged looks like, wow! It’s definitely “Ohayou Gozaimasu” time, but we’ll take it. Watching her little multilingual brain develop is such a joy.

After finally getting up, I took my wife out for sushi at Sushiro, the conveyor-belt place. Our one-year-old was finally napping in the car, so instead of going to the closer Sushiro, I drove all the way to Kumamoto Prefecture—an hour each way. Of course, she woke up about 40 minutes into the drive and started protesting. Thankfully, "The Happy Song" worked its magic, and we made it to the restaurant, where we definitely overindulged in sushi. Our dog got all the scraps our daughter dropped, plus a couple of chicken sushi pieces. He was living his best life!

One funny thing: they had duck sushi, which looked and tasted surprisingly like ham! I was genuinely confused for a moment. After that, we made the long drive back through the countryside, and now it’s 3 a.m. Time to call it a night!

Life here is full of surprises, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. See you next time!
